“Peripheral Regions in Europe. Between Cohesion and Convergence”.
This year the Association celebrates its XXXIV Annual Conference. The chosen theme, “Peripheral Regions in Europe. Between Cohesion and Convergence”, is a highly topical issue, particularly relevant for the development prospects of the Euro-Mediterranean countries.
In recent years, the evolution of the Mediterranean landscape, whose perimeter appears today to be ever more fluid in consideration of the close interconnections between the dynamics in North Africa, the Middle East and the Gulf, has led the European Union to re-examine the centrality of the Mediterranean, also in light of the unsatisfactory budget for its policies.
The increased conflict of the Mediterranean neighborhood, the spread of terrorism and the accentuated focus on migratory flows from the Southern shore may, however, require a security approach to the area.
More generally, the review of the Mediterranean policies should also include a more in-depth reflection on the definition of a global strategy for North Africa, the Middle East and the Gulf, overcoming the current tripartite action of the Union towards the area of Mediterranean and Middle East. The event evolutions have in fact accentuated close sub-regional interconnections that require today a global strategic vision, with a convergence between the objectives and policies of Brussels and the interests and priorities of the Member States.
This scenario of significant changes deserves the attention of the 2019 ARETHUSE meeting. Following the tradition of the Arethuse meetings, experts in different scientific disciplines will discuss topics, such as business, economics, law, geography, management, finance, political science, sociology and others.
Researchers from the different areas are invited to participate in the XXXIV meeting to be held in Italy on 26 and 27 September 2019 at the Department of Political Science, University of Naples Federico II.
